The World Charter for Nature specifically gives non-governmental groups (like Sea Shepherd) the LEGAL status to enforce international law where governments are failing to do so. The first obstacle you need to overcome is to establish if the whalers are breaking the law. Neither the IWC nor the U.N. will confirm that. No group with any authority back the S.S. claim that they have legal authority to do what they're doing. The authority on the his issue is the IWC and they are the ones who have confirmed the research exclusion under which they are whaling. The other place your argument collapses is that although there are police to monitor speeding, if there are none around you still do not have the authority to attack and ram a speeder. Yes, you can watch, record and report those actions to the proper authorities. No one is suggesting the S.S. can't do that because THAT is what the law allows. If the S.S. acted legally, they wouldn't have racked up convictions in multiple countries.

Hi, Ive worked on many a fishing trawler, mainly Greenland, Iceland, North sea areas and your average fisherman although mostly honest and very hard working do bend the rules and tell the odd white lie, yes we do through back bycatch, no we dont over fish, what that fish is endangered well I never.... Now to say what the Japenese are doing in the south in in the interest of scientific research well that's not true is it? As far as I am concerened whale meat is posion, and should not be consumed, talk about mercury and heavy metals wow look at the levels in the bottle nose dolphon 2000ppm WITH 0.2ppm allowed by the WHO, imagine how much a toothed whale contains? Watson is not really a pirate, although he has sunk some pirate whalers. Im sorry to say but having worked in and around fishing for more years than I care to remember (still have all my fingers), Watson is right unless we do something were going to drain the oceans of all its fish etc...

I'd just like to state my own opinion. I am a full supporter of, and future member of, Sea Shepherd. I'd say that this site disgusted me, but that'd be a lie. Though I can't see where you're coming from, Chris, I can definitely see some points. I realize that Paul has probably said some lies. So have I, though, as have you. And think about all the international pressure we're under as an organization. It sure isn't easy. A few disagreements I have, though: Though many people have seen our actions against the whalers as anti-Japanese and therefore racist, we are not, in fact, anti-Japanese in anyway. Japanese people are freaking awesome. We actually have employed a good number of them over the years. I did a research project last year in school about whaling (since I'll be preaching Sea Shepherd 'till the day I die), and it turns out, only about 5% of the Japanese population supports whaling, which really says something. Also, the whalers have harbored a bit of hate themselves: many people seem to enjoy calling us "terrorists,"(hint: we're not; I'd rather die than have to kill someone else) and when Pete Bethune was arrested for trying to arrest the Shonan Maru captain, people showed up with signs saying "Get Out Of The Earth!"...How incredibly civilized....Anyway, it's the Sea Shepherd supporters that actually ARE racist that I hate almost as much as whaling itself. Actually, I hate all radiate that much. Another thing: ramming the Sierra wasn't a crime. The Sierra was a pirate ship, and not in the same sense as the Steve Irwin or Bob Barker. It literally had no flag, making it, as I said, a pirate ship, and therefore unprotected by law for the crimes it was committing. Almost done; sorry for taking up your time. I get why you don't like us, but why support whaling? It's just killing for absolutely no purpose at all. Their only purpose in research is to prove that commercial whaling is sustainable(I personally believe it isn't). But even if it is, it doesn't have the support to survive. The majority of the Japanese population does not support whaling, and very few of the newest generation have even tasted whale meat (most of the folks who haven't don't intend to either). In fact, I think there are roughly 5,000 tons of whale meat put in storage in giant freezers, due to the fact that no one's buying it. And the fleet is costing Japan a lot. They're in a ton of debt, and not paying any of it back. Kinda like America. And finally, whaling is just an outright slap in the face. Many anti-whaling countries graciously extended an open hand to Japan, giving generous and much-needed aid after the infamous earthquake, tsunami, and nuclear crisis, and in return, Japan continues its

Amen, friend. I'm glad to see just how many people of how many backgrounds can support the conservation message.

Well, whaling isn't exactly level with speeding, so I get where you're coming from, but ya might want to find a better example.

This website is a joke! He is not putting peoples lives at risk, they know what they are doing when they sign on to help. This guy is trying to save animals that are killed every year in inhumane ways for 'research'. Whale meat isn't even needed, Japan only started hunting them due to the war. Only a small amount of the population still eats it and thats mostly the older people who were around after the war. How is this right.. www.youtube.com/watch?v=vHqIOOajgFwI've watched that episode and the killing of that whale went on for ages. It just got tired and couldn't stay up long enough to breath but it kept on fighting. It was so horrible to watch, it left me in tears. This man and everyone else who backs him is trying to end this and all you're doing is negative and not going to stop the 'research'. I also read something about the Ady gil, truth is they tried to save it once it was crashed into but as they were towing it it started to sink. These people are amazing at what they do for the whales!

Whatever you moron, no police force in the world ever stands up to large organizations, companies run the world, and they will do whatever they want unless regular people put a stop to it. There IS a treaty that says no whaling in the southern ocean and the Japanese whaling fleet violate that treaty every year, no country's government is going to stop it in the name of international relations, that does NOT make it right.
Whaling is a disgusting practice of slow deliberate torture and murder, if it took as long for a farm to kill a chicken or cow as it does to kill a whale the farms would be shut down, therefore whaling must be shut down. Your site is a piece of shit.

Hi,we are many reunion island surfers and our people have been eaten by sharks (7 attacks in 8 months,2 fatal attacks),and we have been fishing sharks until sea shepherd hassles us and is hyper aggressive towards us.Réunion island belongs to france and we have bulldogs sharks in numbers because the extrmsits biocentrists lobbies don't want sharks to be hunted and ask our government to stop the slaughter of sharks.this is ridiculous because we have 3 or 4 sharks very dangerous in our impact zone ,and lamaya essemlali, sea shepehrd france président ,is suing me for confronting her and her need to implant her private naval army in the european economic zone. cHECK ON FB "pour des excuses publiques de lamya essemlali aux surfers pei" (wich means "for public excuses from lamya essemlali to the reunion island surfers" because she said we were whimps and an embarassement to the world surf communityy ecause we do't want our friends to be eaten anymore. alos check my web site where i tell all the lies from paul watson (in french, sorry about taht guys ;-) www.lesfreresdelacote.webself.net/ we gonna kick their asses out of our country .christophe

I've known Paul for 13 years and took care of Sea Shepherd ships while in port. Since I'm 5 years younger than Paul, and permenently retired, I may go back out there for the summers and help them out. The Sea Shepherds were there when I had my first bout of chest pains. I went on the Sirenian and the Chief engineer kept me for an hour and a half till I got better. This was at midnight when I went to work. I gotten a few more since then, and had to go to the hospital by ambulance, but the docs checked my ticker out and it's OK. It's not known what causes the pains. One reason why the docs retired me. Now I can spend much time doing things for SSCS. Oh yea, Paul was shot at. I saw the bullet, and it was smashed into his vest. Sea Shepherd needs to carry heavily armed security forces on our campaigns. We got the same right as the Japanese whalers. At the request of some visitors to the site, I've added this message board so people can talk about opinions and state their case about their position on the Sea Shepherd and Paul Watson debate. Naturally, as the founder of the site, my position is pretty obvious, but I welcome discussion, debate and argument. I won't be censoring speech as long as it's not unreasonably profane, innappropriate and has some relevancy to the discussions at hand.

ady, When a Klingon Starship, piloted by Capt. James T. Kirk and crew (which came back to Earth in late 1980's to rescue 2 whales (they were extinct) and take them back to the 23rd Century) they came up on a whaling ship trying to harpoon the 2 whales, but the starship came into view and scared the hell out of the whalers, so they backed off post haste, and Scotty lifted 400 tons of whales on to the ship. Scotty said "Captain, we got whales" STAR TREK IV best Star Trek movie ever made, especially Spock's "colorful metaphors" LMAO. This is why we need Sea Shepherd, to keep the whales from being extinct. And I don't give a damn how we stop the illegal whale killing. BTW Greenpeace are wimps, they have never saved even one whale. All they do is pose for pictures. One more thing, Paul and I have had threats against our lives over supporting Sea Shepherd. In my case the cops know of it. And I know who made the threats. One of the guys was a Makah Indian, and he's dead as of 5 years ago, some medical problems. It was 2 Horses who made the threat. The other guy was from California, and I was sent an e-mail coming out of Corcoran Prison, inviting me to a black tie party with me as the target. I copied it, (which I still have) and sent it to the Warden of the prison. We know who the inmate is. He probably got decades added on to his sentence. I'd just like to state my own opinion. Mr Wuhl "Assume the Position" teaches in American History don't report the truth, report the legend, and you did just that, in this case the "facts" good day and i hope you people see the "truth" soon enough What you don't seem to get, Joe, is that we're not interested in the "truth" because that allows for too much subjectivity. "Facts" are far more substantive. And by facts I mean things like all those lies listed on the site that Paul is responsible for. It may be your "truth" that lying is okay for him because he's special and normal rules don't apply. Maybe your "truth" is that lying is always okay. That's why we're sticking to the facts, here. It seems you don't like playing on the side of the pool where the facts linger....

Minke whales are not endangered, nor have they ever been, nor are they going to be. This is not, and has never been, an environmental issue. It's merely an issue of close-minded bigots who want to force their food choices on others. Assaulting people in an attempt to force them to your twisted whale-worshiping is unacceptable and will always be unacceptable. Did you also help Watson abandon the SSII in British Columbia, costing the Canadian government more than $500,000 in cleanup? Yea, real conservationists you guys are. ady, When a Klingon Starship, piloted by Capt. James T. Thanks for taking the initiative to create this board Chris. It has long bothered me that this guy endangers peoples lives at sea to fulfill his own egotistical needs. Not that I am unopposed to widespread whaling. I just happen to think there are safer and more successful ways of achieving it. As far as I can tell, Watson has been more successful at fanning anti-Japanese sentiment than actually saving any cetaceans. Eventually people get tired of standing by and watching the violent murder of whales. When you have had enough of doing things by the book you tend to say to hell with it and take a more strait forward approach.
